Hazel has always loved visits with Granny, yet sleeping over without her parents feels too hard. With butterflies fluttering in her tummy, Hazel isn't sure what she should do. She wants to stay home, but that means missing out on the adventures Granny has planned. When her younger brother Finn has no problem touching a salamander or walking on logs, Hazel tries to ignore her fears. Granny offers suggestions, but even a surprise visit from a unicorn doesn't make the butterflies stop. How will Hazel keep up with Finn and Granny?

Based on the author’s childhood in the mountains of Northern California, this series is about a whimsical granny who shares her back-to-the-land lifestyle with her grandchildren. Mixing magical realism with the natural world, this story will delight fans of Mary Poppins and Pippi Longstocking.

... they heard Finn gasp.
Running to catch up, Hazel turned the corner and gasped, too.
Finn was standing next to a little white pony with a long, twisted horn in the middle of its forehead. It was a unicorn!
“A real live unicorn, Granny!” Hazel called out. “U-N-I-C-O-R-N,” she spelled in her excitement. (an excerpt)

Join Hazel and Finn as they visit their quirky Granny. "Granny can make any day amazing. She's magical that way."
An Award Winning MG chapter book based on some of the coolest parts of my childhood in the mountains of Northern California, this is the tale of a whimsical granny who shares her back-to-the-land lifestyle with two grandchildren. Mixing a dash of magical realism with the natural world, this story will delight fans of Mary Poppins and Pippi Longstocking alike. How would either of these priceless characters have handled living off the land? I think a lot like Granny does! But this story goes even deeper than that. This is also the story of Hazel, a child who is learning how to live with the anxiety she experiences. It can often disrupt the best of plans.

Samantha LeDuc was born and raised in Newmarket, England. She now resides in Southern California. She has three grown daughters. She lives with her husband and large goldendoodle Wilfred, as well as with all the characters dancing around in her head waiting to come alive on a piece of paper.
Samantha received her degree in English literature and absolutely loves books, but her greatest passion is having a pencil in her hand. Samantha brings characters to life, whether in traditional settings or a magical world. She spends most of her time with traditional pencil and paper using watercolors and ink. She is now combining traditional art with digital tools to provide innovative work both in black and white and color.
I have mild anxiety that I didn't recognize until my thirties. I've since noticed it runs in my family, with many members suffering in one form or other. Looking back over my life, I've come to understand how much having anxiety has blocked me from doing various activities.
On the flipside, sometime in the beginning of my teaching career at a Waldorf school, I was encouraged to tell the stories of my childhood to young children, ages 4-7. So I focused on what was fun about growing up in the hippy homesteading lifestyle. I began my stories with "When I was a little girl growing up in the mountains..."
As I wrote these memories down, and simultaneously learned to understand my and my family members' anxiety, this little girl began to take shape. Since much of my whimsical childhood was made so by my mom, who then became a wonderful grandmother, so too Granny took shape.
Neither Hazel nor Granny are me or my mom. As characters do, they became their own people on the page, and have helped me learn even more about myself, my childhood, and my anxiety.
Darcy McCain helped write "Activities for Anxious Feelings" and with pre-reading Adventures with Granny: Butterflies & Bravery for an authentic portrayal of anxiety.
